Theme Weekends 2009

April 25 - Spring Scrapbooking/Class

May 2 - The Races At Chesapeake
Lots of races to cover today:  the Kentucky Derby and NASCAR, not to mention the premier race event of the season: kids can make and customize their own car (materials provided) and race them to the finish line!  In the evening, watch the Big Race on our big screen.

May 8-9 - Mums the Word
We think our moms are pretty special, so we devote the entire weekend to honoring the amazing women who have guided us throughout our lives.  Friday night, bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share and TT will provide the rest at the wine and cheese social. Saturday we have a masseuse and manicurist on-premises, so pamper the mother in your family by purchasing a day spa experience for her that she will truly appreciate.  We’ll serve them light refreshments as they socialize and sink into a state of blissful relaxation!  A special invitation to vendors of women’s products is extended to join our crafters on the Pavilion.  Then on Saturday night, treat your mom to dinner at Trails Café. At the dance that night, mom and dad can rekindle their love on the dance floor.  Thousand Trails is not responsible for what occurs afterward.

May 15  - Country Gospel Music Association Performance
Featuring music for the soul by award-winning performer Jerry Jones!

May 16 - Armed Forces Day
The sacrifices made by our military personnel and their families remind us that freedom is not free.  Saying “Thank you” doesn't begin to express our gratitude for their contributions and sacrifices.  Nonetheless, we seek to honor our armed forces personnel today.  Saturday morning, Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel will be on hand to conduct boat safety inspections.  Dance with DJ at night.

May 22-24 - Memorial Day Celebration
This is a weekend for cookouts, dances and contest titles to challenge or defend.  Old rivalries are revived for a new season at the Spring Horseshoe Tournament.  In another annual contest, friendships and marriages are put to the test in the Blind-folded Golf Cart Race.  Crafters sell their handmade items at the craft bazaar.  And what would the weekend be without dances on Saturday and Sunday nights?

May 30 - Tangier Island Cruise
We’ll car pool to historic Reedville, Virginia, from where this cruise begins.  (Pre-registration is required.)  After a relaxing, narrated cruise, the boat docks at Tangier Island where you are met by a friendly guide. Spend a few hours walking around this quaint island, or take a tour on a golf-cart.  At night join us dancing at the Pavilion for Western Night with DJ.

June 6 - Fishing 101 & Campsite Swap Meet
Don’t know anything about fishing?  No problem.  Our experts will teach you and your child everything you need to know: bait, hooks, fishing rods, fish, casting.  Flea markets more your style?  Buy or sell your used junk… …uuhh, we mean, fine pre-owned collectibles, right from your campsite.  Dance at Dark to follow.

June 13 - Pirates of the Piankatank
Ahoy, Matey!  Jump on board and brandish your sword for this swash-buckling adventure!  Kids, you’ll find all kinds of pirate booty at the Trading Post to help you dress the part.  Friday night, watch the 3rd “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie at the Golf Cart Drive-In Movie Theater. Saturday night, calling all pirates and wenches to the DJ Dance!  Aaaargh!  Funky chicken dancers will be forced to walk the plank!

June 20 - Who’s Your Daddy?
Dads are pretty nifty, so for a few days anyway, let’s treat them nice.  For our part, we’ll serve up free hotdogs at the horseshoe pits during a friendly game of shoes.  Kids, don’t forget to give dear old dad a gift.  You can make one at Arts and Crafts, or buy one from a crafter at the Craft Bazaar.  Ladies, we know this isn’t your day to demonstrate your love and appreciation, but doing so will earn you points.  How about treating your hubby to a macho He-Man meal at the Trails Café Saturday night?  Maybe you’ll get him out on the dance floor at the DJ Dance.

June 27 - Summer Solstice
The lull before the storm of 4th of July week.  Check out the craft show, play carnival games, eat turkey legs and more.

July 4 - Independence Day Weekend Celebration
On Friday, laze around the pool while sipping iced tea and soda. On Saturday, check out the craft bazaar, or decorate your golf cart for our annual golf cart parade. Bragging rights are at stake, so make it good!  The celebration is not over until you’ve kicked up your heels at the Dance at Dark. .

July 11 - Flower Power Show
A trip down Memory Lane for baby boomers. Bring your hippie beads and tie-dye t-shirts. Protest receding hairlines. Do you tap dance, play the piano or spoons, or know every song from “Sound of Music”?  At the “Super Freaky” show, share that hidden talent your relatives coax out of you at family gatherings. (After all, we are family.) Saturday night, enjoy the dance with DJ.

July 13 - 17 - Vacation Bible School
The kids or grandkids won’t have to miss this summertime favorite after all.  Very popular among the younger set, this week-long event is better than any vacation Bible school at home, because it’s combined with camping!

July 18 - Gospel Jamboree
In partnership with the Country Gospel Music Association, we feature multiple performances by some very talented country gospel music groups.  Bring your lawn chairs to the Pavilion in the evening

July 25 - Christmas in July/Ten Thousand Villages Sale
Escape the ordinary.  Discover skillfully handmade items from 3rd World countries. Ten Thousand Villages presents exquisite home décor, personal accessories and gift items handcrafted by artisans from around the world – for you, your home or RV, or as gifts for those special to you.  Dance at Dark Saturday night.

July 26 - Riverfest
With our lovely river as a backdrop, make a raft for the homemade raft race using our materials at hand, or bring your own.

August 1 - Hawaiian Luau
Welcome to the exotic island of Thousand Trails.  Escape to our tropical paradise this weekend, where you can indulge in a Luau feast of smoked pig and be entertained by our own Aloha dancers.  Ladies, at the dance Saturday night, put your men in grass skirts and coconut shells (provided) and cheer them on as they hula to Hawaiian music.  Test your flexibility with Limbo Rock.  How lo-o-o-ow can you go?

August 3-8 Do-Re-Mi Music Week
Children, youth and adult singing ensembles, Introduction to the Keyboard, Singing Class for Adults Who Can’t Carry a Tune, Music Fun for parents and children, and best of all - a children’s musical! Rehearsals for the various programs Monday through Friday, with performances on Saturday. Small fees ranging from $15-50 for each program. Pre-registration required: (804)695-9645.

August 8 - Wagon Wheelers Square Dancing

August 15 - Bingomania and Campsite Swap Meet
For our Bingo-maniacs out there, we’ll play Bingo all day Saturday: Breakfast Bingo, White Elephant Bingo, Candy Bar Bingo and Simply Bingo.  Between bingo games, check out your neighbors’ collectibles for sale, or sell yours right from your campsite.  Dance with DJ at night.

August 21-22 - Country Gospel and Nifty 50's
(No correlation intended.)  Enjoy a toe-tapping performance by the Country Gospel Music Association on Friday night.  Saturday, join us for Nifty 50’s – with a hula hoop contest and root beer floats.  Ladies, wear your poodle skirts and saddle shoes to dance with your Fonzie look-alike partner to 50’s music.

August 29 - Back-To-School Blues
Kids, we share your pain.  Let’s make it a weekend to remember before school takes over your lives again for another 9 months. Pool Party at the Family Pool for all.  Music, food and games available throughout the day.  Teens only are allowed at the party in the Game Room.  Bring your own CDs.  At night, Dance with DJ.

September 4-6 - Labor Day Celebration
It’s the last fling of summer, and our party starts poolside on Friday with the island tunes of Jimmy Buffet drifting over the water.  If horseshoes is your thing, play in the last tournament of the year on Saturday.  Saturday night, join your fellow campers at the DJ Dance.  Sunday night, more entertainment is provided with a Dance at Dark.  Finally on Monday, we have a rare treat for man’s most loyal and deserving friends – our dogs.  Before we close the pool for the year, dogs accompanied by their owners are permitted to swim and play in the Family Pool. The Adult Pool will be open to all ages that same day for those who do not wish to share the water with canines!

September 12 - Wine and Cheese Social
Now that the kids are back to school, it’s time for us adults to pamper ourselves.  Enjoy the peace that descends over the campground after the craziness of Labor Day weekend.  In the evening, join your fellow campers for a wine and cheese social.  Bring your favorite bottle of wine and Thousand Trails will supply the rest.

September 19 - 3rd Annual Bluegrass Festival
It’s our third annual bluegrass festival! This year, Made From Scratch, Solid Rock, Mark Templeton and Remington Ryde will set your toes a-tappin’ and your hands a-clappin’!  Bring your lawn chairs, and enjoy sensational music throughout the day.

September 26- (TO BE DETERMINED)

October 3- Dog Daze
We can’t help it that cats are not that crazy about appearing in public, so for the most part this weekend, dogs rule.  Deck out your furry friend and enter him or her in the best-dressed dog contest.  Maybe the two of you together might win the dog/owner look-alike prize.  As for our feline Fluffies, they are welcome to sit for their Pet Glamour shots along with Fido.  May we suggest that pet portraits make great Christmas cards and gifts?

October 10-13th - Annual Seafood Festival and Dragon Run Day
This festival is one of our biggest events of the year.  On the second Saturday of every October, we celebrate and enjoy tasty seafood and celebrate the rich heritage of the Dragon Run.  Also featured is an RV dealer display, games, craft bazaar, hayrides and live entertainment throughout the day.

October 17 - 5th - Annual Chili Cook Off
It’s our 5th Annual Chili Cook-off, and the competition gets more interesting every year.  Once a 5-ingredient chili won the People’s Choice Award.  Another year, 3 sisters who had never made chili before won a prize.  So who knows?  Maybe it’s your turn!  If history is any guide, the gourmands have every reason to fear!

October 24 - (TO BE DETERMINED)

October 31  Halloween Weekend
Chesapeake Bay is, hands down, the best place to bring your kids or grandkids for Halloween.  Dozens of rigs are decorated for our annual contest, there are pumpkins to be painted or carved, and stiff (ha!ha!) costume contests for all ages.  Trick-or-treat around the campground at nightfall, then dance off all that sugar at the Monster Mash Dance, DJ’d by Count Dracula himself.

November 6-7 - 52nd Annual Urbanna Oyster Festival
Cited as one of the best small-town festivals on the East Coast, this year is sure to be spectacular as ever. Parades both Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Hundreds of arts, crafts and food booths line the streets. Twenty miles up the road, the whole town of Urbanna closes for this two-day event.

November 14 - Casino Night
Saturday night, play black jack and win TT bucks to spend in the blind prize auction.  Prizes guaranteed not to be fair.

November 26 - Thanksgiving Feast
Share warm fellowship and good food with our family of members as we count our blessings.  Bring a covered dish to share, and TT will provide the turkey and dressing.

December 31 - New Year's Eve Party
